Organizing and Decluttering!

Hello! My name is Patricia TenEyck and I am a professional home organizer. My business, Perfect Ten Professional Organizing, is partnering with Goodwill of the Finger Lakes in order to encourage the process of de-cluttering and the importance of donating. I’m also so excited to share how Goodwill can be an amazing resource for those who are looking to get organized, while also staying on budget.

Now that the holiday’s are behind us, I’m sure you’ve noticed there is an influx of “stuff” that we have welcomed into our homes. These winter months are the perfect time to hunker down and sort through all our belongings, old and new. Whether they be items that are needed and useful or objects that could better serve others--taking on this project is important so that we truly only possess items that have a purpose in our everyday lives. This in turn will allow us to let go of items that have served their purpose for others in need.

With the hope that this has sparked some motivation to go through your closet, your toy room, or your kitchen drawers (and beyond!), I want to share my top 3 tips for getting and staying organized:

Tip #1-Abide by the “one in one out rule”

To combat clutter and stop overspending, follow the “one in one out” rule so that every time you purchase something, you are discarding an item you already own of similar value. This will help you decrease unnecessary spending, so the next time you consider purchasing something you will think “what am I going to give up when I bring this home?” When discarding an item, Goodwill of the Finger Lakes would be a great place to easily drop off your items and you will walk away knowing your donation is helping someone in your local community.

Tip #2-Get creative when thinking of storage solutions

Getting organized doesn’t mean having to break the bank on expensive organizing tools! Get creative and re-purpose old Tupperware containers to house items in your desk drawer, or use a set of shower hooks to display purses in your closet. Goodwill of the Finger Lakes would be a great place to start if you’re looking for storage solutions that are creative and inexpensive.

Getting Organized

Tip #3-Regularly reassess your belongings

In order to remain organized, it is important to reassess your belongings every so often. A good example of doing so would be when doing a seasonal wardrobe swap, pay attention to what items you are putting away. If you are about to store a pair of shorts away for the winter, but you know you didn’t wear them once all summer long, that is a good sign that the need for them is low. If you dread this sort of project and have a hard time making decisions like this, calling in a professional will benefit you greatly. As a professional, I will guide you through the decision making process and help hold you accountable to see the process through completion. Keeping an eye out around your house for things like this will allow you to use space in your home more efficiently, and will allow you to reach your goals of streamlining and simplifying your life and home.
